Week 2

I just submitted my game ideas. For my first 2 ideas, I had a puzzle game and horror game in mind. I’m really interested in my puzzle game because it’s more concerned with design and interactions of objects. The main focus is being able to influence the the environment with smaller controllable tablets. For my 3d modelling class, I was planning to do a horror animation so I felt I could try and mix my classes together for a better workflow if I made a horror game. The gameplay is more about exploration and finding out what the monster does. I didn’t have a third idea, but I wanted to focus on design and puzzles like my first idea, so I decided on a puzzle platformer. It focus on solving intertwining puzzles.

Week 14

I had a rough week this week, I didn’t make any additions to my project. I’m still going to still focus on my menu and level transition before testing the movetowards command. I made a game for another class with some of these codes so I will need to figure out how to make it fit with my game.

I finished my contract work for my classmate. I had trouble at first because the model glitched out when I imported the animations to Unity. Hopefully my animations were useful. Another classmate made sound effects for me. I think they turned out really way, I’ll have to implement them later.

Week 13

This week I decided to change my direction of my workflow. Instead of completing my lvl.2 and 3, I decided to work on the menu and level transition. I got a menu to work, but I still need work on the transition. I will need to make enumerations of my levels into a switch function and put it on my exit collider. I will need to invoke it so give the game time to fade to white so the player doesn’t teleport instantly. I discovered a MoveTowards command that I might use to move my obstacles, but I haven’t gotten to test it yet.

For my contractor work, I am going to make animations for one of my classmates. The animations include walking, running, jumping, and throwing. I will work on walking and running during this weekend and finish the other 2 before Friday.

Week 12

I created the layout for my level 2 and 3 and a pressure plate prefab. No scripts on anything yet. They’re not very clean, I will try to rebuild them with probuilder. I learned about loading scenes, enumeration, and switches in another class. I think this will hep me clean up some code when I get to it.

I also had to set up a contractor work. My classmates and I will help create assets for each other. I wrote one up about making sound effects for me. I’m prioritizing making models and animations for other people.

I’ll need to playtest my game with other people. I have some friends and siblings that can help me. It’s due the 17th, I want to make sure to make my level 2 and 3 functional over the weekend.

Week 11

I updated my GDD: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xZulBDnckJTi7hRpiNRRLLBEX7skwJ-6Ojm0MljVvlw/edit?usp=sharing

I added my 2 levels and elaborated on the art and sound design. They won’t be my priority yet, but I have more sense of direction in what I want to do with them. Also, I moved the device drag to a secondary control. I’m having a hard time with myself and want to focus on easier mechanics to implement. I might change my focus towards more environmental mechanics like the pressure plates. I haven’t thought of a reset level button yet in case the player wants to start the level over. For now, I’m designing levels so the player won’t need to reset.

Week 10

Last week was Spring Break, I decided to take it easy. This week, I designed levels 2 and 3 for my game. I will update my GDD with this for next week along with other changes to the GDD. I think the levels will have the most changed in my GDD. I don’t plan on adding any more mechanics yet and I haven’t thought about the other parts of my game yet such as sound.

Week 8

I completed and presented my vertical slice to the class.

Over the last week, I added walls to my level, a moveable obstacle, an exit that can cause the screen to fade to white, and a button that can detect a mouse click. I couldn’t get the drag device to work so I used a button instead. There are some things in my level I can work on such as causing the moveable obstacle to stop.

For now, my main focus is creating 3 level and a pressure plate mechanic. After this, I’ll go back and try to figure out the drag device. If I still have trouble, I may need to think up a new mechanic or make more in-depth levels with my existing mechanics.

Week 7

I have the models of the tablet and device. I will make my level a plane with cubes for walls to prevent the player from walking off. I still need to figure out how the device will detect a player mousehold input and drag it. I will link the device movement to a bigger object and that should complete the tablet functions. Hopefully, I can figure it out quickly so I can work on portal exit that will fade to white.

Week 6

I successfully created a working player controller. The capsule player can move and turn their camera even if it’s really slow. I’ll figure out a way to increase its speed, for now it just works.

I also made the podium model with Maya. I’ll turn it into a prefab and add a script that will automatically offset devices to a certain point on the podium. That way, I can focus on creating needed devices and drop them in whenever I need them. I’ll then make sure the devices can detect mouse inputs. Each device will have a script with a gameobject attached to it so I can tell it to move if the device moves. For now, a horizontal slider is what I’m going to focus on.

Week5

Here’s a spreadsheet schedule of my game: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WFiRZpj2BBabHIzbb302Dt62aUBSpx8o_kC2OgC9V0I/edit?usp=sharing

I underestimated the difficulty of making the character controller. I thought of replicating the tutorial of the Roll a Ball tutorial for my controls but realized that won’t work if I use a capsule as my character. I successfully locked the camera view in the capsule, but I will work on the capsule movement before getting the camera movement right. I’ll need a vertical slice in around 3 weeks, it will be my first level. I’ll need the character controls working, at least 1 tablet function, and a map.

Week 4

I wrote up my GDD. I didn’t get the 7 pages for the assignment though: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1K3nTucJWdU-whZbzpv7sIFE17a06qs_aU4t4lE-dXXg/edit?usp=sharing

For next week, I’ll focus on creating the character controls and making the tablet. I haven’t modeled anything complex with Unity so if I have a hard time making anything, I’ll use Maya instead. For the devices, I’ll have them attached to an invisible block so I can easily anchor them to the tablet. If I manage to complete all this, I’ll work on connecting the tablet’s functions to the environment so I can complete my first level.
